We would like to introduce you to our flock of Chickens.
We get our first two sets of hatching eggs from a free ranger in Wetumpka, they are mixed breeds from proven egg layers. The eggs come in a mix of white, light brown, dark brown, both big and small. They come with a 70% hatch rate which is 16-17 out of the 24 we buy. Our goal with these is to raise enough for us to have eggs this fall or next spring. We will cull what we do not need of the roosters. We have a coop built to hold 50-60 chickens. We aim to have 15+ egg layers and will need 4-5 roosters to keep those hens safe and happy.
We started back on March 11 2015 with our first 11 chickens.
Here are the ones that remain from the first 11.
These are the ones that remain from our second batch.
Please do not take offense to the current condition of our coop, we will be mucking out and scraping as soon as it is warm enough.
Here are the first for 2016.
We have one hen and two roosters from these.
We also added Jersey Giants and Araucaunas shortly after the black sex links.
Here are our Jersey Giants
And here are our Araucana Hens.
And finally we added 11 Rhode Island Reds.
